Daksha Plastics is tucked away in 1st Gouthan Lane over in Santacruz West. We are at number 15 in the Ratanvali building. It’s a narrow lane, and if you’re driving, you might miss it the first time. The shop is full of plastic goods of all shapes and sizes. We have buckets, chairs, and containers piled up. It smells like a mix of plastic and the rain during the monsoon. I’ve been working here for a long time and I know where every single item is hidden, even if it looks like a mess to anyone else. The lighting is a bit yellow and one of the bulbs always seems to be out. We get a lot of housewives coming in looking for kitchen stuff or storage boxes. I usually sit near the front door to catch whatever breeze comes down the lane. There's a tea stall just two doors down that makes really good ginger tea, so I’m usually there a couple of times a day. We don't have a website or anything like that. People just find us by walking past or hearing about us from their neighbors. It’s a very local way of doing things. The rent goes up every few years, which is a bit of a headache, but we manage to keep going. It’s a plain, honest business and we like being part of the Santacruz neighborhood. In the evenings, the lane gets very lively with people coming home from work and stopping by for things.
