About Attari Antique Furniture – Furniture in Mumbai
Oshiwara is well known for its furniture, and our shop is right in the middle of it at 10 Chaturvedi Compound. My hands are almost always covered in wood dust or some kind of dark stain. We spend our mornings looking at old chairs and tables that people have brought in. Some of these pieces are falling apart when they arrive, but you can see the potential under the grime. It is messy work and we don't mind it. The compound is always crowded with scraps of timber and old tools. We do not have a fancy showroom with bright lights and air conditioning. It is just us and the wood. Sometimes a customer comes in looking for something very specific from a long time ago. We have to dig through the piles in the back just to find it. The air in here always smells like old teak and fresh polish. We do not really follow a very strict schedule. If a piece of furniture needs more sanding, then it gets more sanding. It is not about being the fastest in the market. We just like the way things used to be made back then. A lot of the new stuff today is just cardboard and glue. Here, we deal with real materials. My father taught me most of what I know about this trade. We just try to keep things looking good for a few more decades. It is a quiet life.
