If you walk through Dharavi City Pride Market Yard 1, you’ll eventually run into us. Anuraj Art Designers & Printers is tucked away in the middle of all that market bustle. It’s loud out there, but inside it’s mostly the sound of the machines running. We’ve got piles of paper everywhere and the smell of ink is pretty much stuck in our clothes by now. It isn't a huge space, so we have to be careful where we step. There’s always a stack of something waiting to be moved or a machine that needs a little nudge to keep going. We don't have a fancy waiting area or anything like that. People just drop by, tell us what they need, and we get to work. The market yard is always moving, with trucks coming in and people shouting, so it’s never quiet. We usually have a radio playing somewhere in the background to keep things lively. Sometimes the power goes out for a minute and we all just sit there waiting for it to come back so we can finish the job. It’s a messy business, but we’re used to it. The floor is usually covered in little bits of trimmed paper. We sweep up at the end of the day, but by the next morning, it looks exactly the same again. It’s just life at the shop.
