Al Aqmar Hardware Merchants has been sitting here in the Ashok Shopping Centre for a long time. Our shop is Building No. 91-A, which is really close to G.T. Hospital. Being near Crawford Market and Fort means it is always loud and crowded outside. We deal with all sorts of hardware items, from basic nails and screws to more specific tools that people need for home repairs. The shelves are packed tight, and sometimes it takes us a minute to find exactly what a customer is asking for because there’s just so much stuff shoved in there. We get all kinds of people walking in, from professional contractors to locals who just need a single washer to fix a leaky tap. The shop is small and the air doesn't move much, so we usually have a small fan going behind the counter. It’s a family-run kind of vibe where we know the other shopkeepers in the building. We start our day by opening the shutters and sweeping the front step before the heavy market traffic kicks in. There isn't much room to move around inside when we have a delivery arriving, so we have to be quick about stacking the boxes. It’s a bit of a maze of metal and plastic, but we know where everything is. People like coming here because we’ve been around the Fort area long enough to know the local buildings and what kind of plumbing or hardware they usually use.
