Ajanta Furniture Work

I’ve been working at 6 Dharavi Kelkar Road for a long time now. Ajanta Furniture Work is just a small place where we handle wood and fix up things people need for their homes. Most of the time it’s sawdust everywhere and the sound of hammers going. It’s not a fancy shop. We have some old tools and some newer ones too, depending on what the job asks for. People come in with broken chairs or they want a cupboard made to fit a specific corner in their house. We just look at the wood, measure it out, and get to work. Sometimes the tea guy comes by and we take a break on the bench outside. Dharavi is always busy, so there is always noise from the street, but we just keep our heads down. It’s hard work on the hands and sometimes the wood doesn’t cooperate like you want it to. We don’t have a big office or anything. If you come by, you’ll probably see me or one of the other guys covered in dust. We just try to finish the pieces so they stay together and do what they are supposed to. It’s just how things are done here. Nothing too special, just saws, glue, and nails. If someone needs a table, we make a table. That’s about it really. We aren't trying to be the biggest shop in the city, just keeping busy and making things that work.
