Our workshop is over in Matunga West. We are at G 16 in the Shalimar Industrial Estate. It is right near the Tata Power House, which is a big landmark that most people use to find their way here. The estate is always crowded with trucks and people moving crates around. It gets pretty loud with all the metal clanging and the sounds of work coming from the other units nearby. We’ve been in this same spot for quite a long time now. The floor is made of old concrete and it has some dark oil stains from the machines we handle every day. We don’t have much in the way of a fancy office, just a small desk in the corner with a lamp and some old ledgers for keeping track of things. The air in the estate can get a bit heavy with the smell of grease and exhaust, so we keep the big shutter rolled up most of the day for a breeze. There is a small tea stall just outside the main gate where we all go for a short break. The walls inside are painted a dull grey and have some old calendars pinned up. It is a practical place meant for hard work, not for showing off to anyone. Our neighbors are mostly other small engineering firms, so we help each other out with tools sometimes. If you come by, you’ll probably have to dodge a few delivery vans in the narrow lanes. It’s just a busy, messy, honest place where we get the machinery work done.
