Our place is at 6, Pudhumandabam, on East Chitrai Street in Madurai. If you know the area, you know it’s right near the big temple. It’s probably one of the busiest streets in the whole city. There are always devotees, tourists, and cows wandering around the entrance. We are tucked in near the Jeyalakshmi Book Shop, which is a very famous spot for locals. Radhakrishna Foodland is mostly about moving food products and supplies to different places. The shop is small and high-ceilinged, like many of the old buildings in this historic part of town. It stays relatively cool inside because of the thick stone walls, even when the Madurai heat is unbearable outside in the afternoon. We have stacks of bags and boxes everywhere. It’s a bit of a squeeze to walk around sometimes if we have a big shipment in. We don't have fancy displays or glass windows. People know what we have and they come to get it. The atmosphere is very traditional. You can hear the temple music and the bells all day long. My family has been doing business in this specific area for a couple of generations now. We know all the other shopkeepers on the street. We often share a coffee or help each other out if someone needs change. It’s a tight community. We don't do any big advertising. Word of mouth and being in such a prime location is enough for us to keep going.
