Running Natraj Oil Mills Private Limited out here on the Chennai High Way in Uthangudi means we see a lot of trucks passing by all day. The location at 2/16 is right where the traffic picks up, so it’s never really quiet. We’ve been pressing oil here for a while, and the floors always have that slight slickness to them no matter how much we sweep. It’s just the nature of the work. We get the seeds in, usually by the truckload, and then the machines take over for the heavy pressing. The smell of crushed seeds is everywhere, which some people don't like, but to us, it just smells like work. We spend a lot of time maintaining the machinery because if a press goes down, everything stops. It’s a lot of grease and heavy tools. Our office is just a small corner partitioned off from the main mill area where we keep the ledgers and handle the billing. Uthangudi can get really dusty with the highway right there, so we’re constantly wiping down the desks. The staff mostly lives nearby, and we’ve all been working together for years. We don’t have fancy uniforms or a polished reception area. It’s just a mill. We focus on getting the drums filled and loaded onto the transport vehicles. Some days are longer than others, especially when a big shipment comes in late, but we just stay until it’s finished.
