About M.R. Marimuthu Dall Mill – Food & Beverages in Madurai
Started the mill here at 48/3, Subbiah Street a long time ago. Sangliyandapuram is a busy place and we just fit right in with the rest of the shops. Mostly we spend our days with the machines running. It gets pretty loud and there is always fine dust from the lentils in the air, but that is just how it is. You get used to it after a while. My father used to say the work is honest if your hands are dirty at the end of the day. We get the raw stock in big jute bags and then it goes through the cleaners and the rollers. Sometimes the power goes out in the afternoon, which is frustrating because everything stops. We just sit outside on the steps until it comes back on. People from around here know where we are. We don't have a big sign or anything fancy. Just the mill and the pulses. It’s hard work, especially in the summer when the tin roof gets hot. We keep the floor swept, but with the dall coming through, it's a constant job. Usually, we finish up by late evening and head home. It is a simple life here on Subbiah Street. We don't do much else besides this. The neighbors are good people and we've known them for years. If the machinery breaks, I usually fix it myself or call the guy from down the road. That’s about all there is to say.
