Bella Beat Rice

We are located at 55, Cape Road in Edalakudi. It’s a busy road that goes down toward the coast. Most people know us because they pass by on their way to work. We deal in different kinds of rice. You can see the open sacks near the entrance so people can feel the grain. It’s important to know what you are buying. The shop isn't very wide but it goes back a long way. It stays relatively cool inside because of the high ceilings. I spend my days weighing out portions into plastic bags. Some people want five kilos, others want twenty. My scale is an old one but it’s accurate. The floor is just plain cement. We sweep it every evening but there’s always some grain left in the cracks. Edalakudi is a lively place to have a business. You hear the horns and the people talking outside all the time. I have a small stool I sit on when there are no customers. I usually read the paper or just look out at the traffic on Cape Road. It isn't a complicated business. We buy the rice and we sell it. There are no fancy tricks here. We just try to be fair and keep things simple. Sometimes the humidity makes the air feel thick, but that’s just part of living near the cape. We have our regulars who come every month without fail. I’ve lived in this neighborhood all my life, so I know almost every face that walks through the door.
