About Bala Dhall & Flour Merchants – Food & Beverages in Madurai
We are located at number 50 on South Raja Street. It’s right in the middle of Arokiyapuram. You can usually smell the grain before you even see the shop. We spend our days dealing with different kinds of dhall and grinding flour for the people around here. The machines make a lot of noise, so it’s never really quiet inside. There are bags of lentils and grains stacked up to the ceiling in the back room. Sometimes it’s hard to find a place to sit down because there’s so much stock everywhere. We’ve been in this street for many years, and we know most of the people who walk by every day. It’s a simple business. We get the raw grains, we clean them, and then we sell them to anyone who comes in. My hands are always white with flour dust by the time I go home for dinner. We don't use any fancy computers to keep track of things; we mostly just use a big ledger and a pen. It’s worked for us so far. The front door stays open all day to let a bit of air in, but it still gets stuffy when the sun hits the building in the afternoon. It’s just us and the bags of grain, day in and day out. We don’t think much about doing things differently. It's just a regular local shop.
