Bhagwan Chowk is always a mess of traffic and people shouting, and our place at 10916 in Pratap Nagar is right in the middle of it. We spend most of our time surrounded by steel rods and flat sheets. The walls of the shop are covered in a layer of fine dust that never really goes away no matter how much we sweep. We have a couple of heavy wooden desks where we sit to handle the orders and talk to people. The phone rings quite a bit, usually someone asking if we have a specific size in stock right now. We have to walk all the way to the back of the storage area to check the piles. It is pretty dim back there, so we keep a torch handy. The inventory is stacked nearly to the ceiling. You have to be careful when you are walking between the rows. We have a small radio that plays the local station, mostly just for background noise while we work. The light comes in through the front door because there are no windows. On rainy days, the water pools a bit near the step and we have to put down gunny bags so people do not slip. We know the other traders on the block well. We often share a pot of tea in the afternoon when the rush dies down for a bit. It is a straightforward business.
