Sharma Caterers & Sweets

The kitchen at Sharma Caterers & Sweets is usually steaming. We are over on Feroz Pur Road in Gurdev Nagar. It’s a good spot because people can find us easily. There are big metal vats for boiling milk and huge trays for the sweets. Everything is heavy. My back usually aches by the afternoon from lifting the trays. We don’t use a lot of machines; it’s mostly hand work. You can see the sugar crystallizing on the edges of the pans. The floor gets a bit sticky, no matter how much we wash it. In Gurdev Nagar, people are always planning some sort of event. They come in to talk about their orders and we write everything down in a big ledger with a blue pen. The pen is always running out of ink. We have a small area in the front where people can see what’s ready. The glass is a bit old and has a few ripples in it. Outside, Feroz Pur Road is always humming with cars. We get a lot of dust from the road, so we are constantly dusting the front counter. The staff has been here for a while. We know how each other works without having to say much. We drink tea together in the afternoon when there’s a gap in the work. It’s a plain place, but we keep it running every single day. We just focus on getting the orders right for the families who come in.
