Poddar Tyres Ltd is right on the G T Road where all the heavy traffic goes by. You can’t miss the smell of rubber when you get close to the place. We have stacks of tires piled up high against the walls. Some are for trucks and some are for smaller cars. It gets really dusty because of the highway being so close. We spend a good part of the morning just wiping down the stock so people can see the tread. The sun beats down on the front of the shop all afternoon. We have a couple of old chairs outside where we sit when there are no customers. You can hear the big lorries rumbling past and it makes the windows rattle sometimes. We’ve been on G T Road for years and have seen the road change so much. The floor is stained black from the rubber and the jacks we use. It is a physical job and our backs feel it by the evening. We don’t have a fancy showroom or anything like that. It’s just a practical space for tires and tubes. Sometimes the air compressor is so loud we can’t even hear ourselves talk. We just keep an eye on the road for the next vehicle to pull in. It’s a simple routine that we’ve stuck to for a long time. The work is steady and we just keep the shop open for the drivers.
