Working with steel wire in Ludhiana means you are always around heavy machinery and the sound of metal clicking. We are based at H-4 in the Textile Colony which is part of Industrial Area-A. It is a big shed where we have the drawing machines and the spools lined up. At Gupta Steel Wire Inds the air usually smells like industrial lubricant and cold metal. In the winter the steel feels freezing to the touch until the machines have been running for a few hours. We spend a lot of time just watching the wire go through the dies to make sure it doesn't snap or get tangled. It’s a repetitive kind of job but you have to pay attention or things go wrong fast. The floors are concrete and they have seen a lot of wear over the years from the heavy rolls being moved back and forth. We don't have a big staff just a few guys who know how to handle the wire without getting hurt. The Textile Colony is a busy place so there are always people moving about and trucks loading up nearby. We just keep our heads down and get through the production schedule. It isn't a glamorous business by any means but it is what we do every day. We just focus on keeping the machines maintained and the wire moving through the shop.
