Down here in Gill Miller Ganj, things never really stop moving. It’s one of those parts of town where there’s always a truck backing up or someone shouting over the sound of a heavy machine. At Ajay Steel Industries, we’ve been tucked away in this corner for a long time. My father used to say that metal is the only thing that stays honest, and I guess that’s stuck with me through the years. We spend most of our time dealing with raw materials and getting things shaped up for whoever needs them. It’s a bit of a mess sometimes, with scraps on the floor and oil on the benches, but that’s how a real workshop looks. I’m usually the first one in to open the shutters every morning. The air smells like burnt metal and old grease, which I don’t even notice anymore. We aren't trying to be the biggest place around, just the one that does the job right without too much fuss. Sometimes the electricity goes out and we just sit around and have tea until it comes back. It gives us a chance to talk about the local news or how the kids are doing in school. We know most of the people on the street by name. It’s a tight community in Miller Ganj, and we’re just glad to be a small part of it. We keep our heads down and stay busy with the work at hand, day after day.
