Our place is located right in the Sarai Kayasthan Sabji Mandi. Being in the vegetable market means everything starts very early, often before the sun is even up. Rokadeshwar Farmers Producer Company Ltd. is where we handle a lot of the business side of farming. It’s not like a regular shop with pretty displays. There are usually crates around and people talking about crop prices and the weather. We work with the farmers from the surrounding areas who bring their stuff to the mandi. It gets very loud and crowded here, especially in the mornings when the trucks are unloading. There is always the smell of fresh earth and vegetables in the air. We spend a lot of time on the phone or talking to people who come into the office with mud on their boots. It’s practical work. We deal with the realities of growing things and getting them to the market. Sometimes the harvest is good, and everyone is happy, and other times it’s tough. We don’t have a fancy office with air conditioning or nice chairs. It’s just a functional space in the middle of all the action at Sarai Kayasthan. It’s a lot of paperwork and coordination, making sure the producers get a fair deal. It’s honest work, and we are right there in the thick of it every single day. I usually go through a lot of pens writing down figures and notes in our ledgers.
