We run the Veena Foundation out of a house at Aj 154 in Salt Lake City, Sector 2. It’s a residential area, so it’s much quieter than the main streets of Kolkata. The building looks like any other home in the block, which we think makes it more welcoming for the people we try to help. We have a few rooms set up as offices and a small area where we keep our records and materials. There is usually a pot of tea going in the small kitchen because someone is always dropping by for a chat or to ask for assistance. Our work isn't about big galas or flashy events. We mostly spend our time on the ground, talking to families and trying to figure out small ways to make their lives a bit easier. Sometimes we run out of space when we get donations in, and boxes end up piled in the hallway for a few days. It can be a bit disorganized at times, but we always manage to get things to the right people eventually. The staff here is just a few dedicated folks who live nearby and care about the community. We don't have a big budget for fancy things, so we make do with what we have. It’s just a simple operation run with a lot of patience and a bit of hard work every day. We don't need much more than that.
