Down in Bhatar Chati, in the Burdwan district of West Bengal, you’ll find our little Ultratech spot. It’s located near the post office, which makes it easy to explain to people who are coming from further out. This part of Bengal is very different from the big cities. It’s a bit slower, and the landscape is much greener, though it gets incredibly humid during the summer months. Our work here involves a lot of interaction with the local community. We see a lot of small builders and farmers who are looking to fix up their properties. We keep our records in big ledgers and spend a lot of time checking the inventory in the back. The building we are in is older, and it has that specific smell of concrete and paper. Most of the staff here grew up nearby, so we speak the local language and know the families in the village. It’s a straightforward life. We open up early, sweep the front, and wait for the first trucks to arrive from the main plant. There is a small market nearby where we get our snacks. When the rain comes down heavy, we all huddle inside and wait for it to pass so we can get back to loading. It’s a simple, honest way to earn a living, and we take pride in knowing that the cement we move is building the homes in our own neighborhood. We just do what needs doing.
