You can find us at 4/1A, Gopi Mohan Dutta Lane, which is right in the heart of Baghbazar. North Kolkata has these narrow lanes that all look the same if you aren't from here, but we’ve been on this corner for a long time. Shome Enterprise is just a small operation. We handle various supplies and trade things that local people and businesses need. The building is old, with high ceilings and thick walls that keep it somewhat cool, though the humidity still gets to you. We have an old wooden desk that’s probably been here longer than I have. There are always stacks of receipts and old ledgers lying around. We don't spend money on fancy decorations or advertisements. Most people find us because they’ve lived in Baghbazar their whole lives and know where Gopi Mohan Dutta Lane is. It’s a noisy neighborhood, especially when there is a festival at the ghats or a procession passing by. We start early, usually with a cup of tea, and stay open until the sun goes down. Sometimes we just sit on the stools outside and watch the neighbors go about their business. It’s a simple way of running things, without any of that modern corporate stuff. We just focus on the daily tasks and the people who walk through the door.
