One Rawdon Welfare Association

Our association is based at 1 Sarojini Naidu Sarani here in Kolkata. It is right in the middle of everything, so it gets quite loud with the honking and the crowds outside. We aren't a big organization with a bunch of fancy titles. It’s really just a few of us who care about what happens on this street and the surrounding blocks. We spend a lot of time dealing with the small stuff that comes up every day. Sometimes it’s a problem with the water or maybe a dispute between neighbors. We sit in our small office and try to sort things out. The walls could probably use a fresh coat of paint, but we haven't gotten around to it yet. We use simple notebooks to keep track of things. It’s not very high-tech, but it works for us. Most of us have lived in Kolkata our whole lives, so we know how things work here. We don't put on any acts. If you come by, you’ll just see us working or having a quick snack between tasks. It’s a practical way to run things. We don't have big speeches or grand plans. We just take it day by day and try to keep the place running smoothly. It’s a lot of work, but someone has to do it. We’re just regular neighbors looking out for each other.
