Manab Jati Kalyan Foundation

The Manab Jati Kalyan Foundation is tucked away on B. R. Ambedkar Lane in the Rathtala area. The address is a bit of a mouthful with all those numbers, F-57/67/1327, but once you find the lane, you’ll find us. This part of Kolkata Parganas North is pretty crowded and the lanes are narrow. We’ve been here for a while and the neighbors all know us by now. The office is basically just a few rooms where we keep our supplies and do our planning. It’s a local operation, run by people who actually live around here. We don't have a lot of fancy equipment, just the basics like a couple of computers and some old filing cabinets. The floor is usually covered in boxes or papers because there’s always something going on. It’s not the quietest place to work, but we like the energy of the neighborhood. We spend a lot of time talking to people who walk in off the street. There’s always someone needing something or just wanting to say hello. We don't have any formal receptionists or anything. If you walk in, you just talk to whoever is sitting closest to the door. We handle the foundation's business in a way that feels right for our community. It’s practical and it’s what we know. We try to keep our overhead low so we can focus on the actual tasks we have at hand.
