Khadim India Limited has this office over on Taltala Lane in Kolkata. It’s an old part of the city, and the building reflects that history quite a bit. Inside, you’ll find stacks of boxes and people moving back and forth between the different departments. We deal with shoes and everything related to them, so there is often that faint smell of leather and rubber in the air. It’s not a quiet place. There are always voices echoing down the hallways and the sound of heavy doors closing. We’ve been in this West Bengal location for a long time, and the floors show the wear and tear of many years of work. Our desks are covered in ledgers and samples that we need to check. We don't have a fancy lobby with modern art. It’s a practical workspace where people come to do their jobs. During the monsoon, the lane outside sometimes floods, which makes getting to work an adventure. We usually gather around the small canteen area for tea and biscuits when we have a moment. The staff here has been around for years, so we all know each other’s habits. We don't try to sound like a big corporate entity when we talk to people. We’re just workers in a shoe company trying to keep things moving along. It’s a busy, dusty, and honest place to spend the day. You can see the city life passing by right outside our windows.
