K M Cariyappa School is located at Hanchala Gate, right on the road that connects Kolar to Bangarpet. Being on SH5 means there is always something moving outside our gates. The school itself is a simple building that fits right into the local landscape. We have a gate that we keep closed during school hours, but otherwise, it’s a very open place. The rooms are spread out, and we have a small patch of ground where we try to grow some flowers and shrubs, though the cows sometimes get in and eat them. Our teachers mostly live in Kolar and they take the local bus to get here every morning. It’s a hardworking group of people. We don’t have air conditioning or anything fancy like that, just some ceiling fans that hum quite loudly. The students come from the villages nearby, and many of them walk or cycle to school. In the rainy season, the road outside can get quite muddy, so the floors inside usually end up with a lot of footprints. We don't mind too much; it’s just part of being a school in this area. We have a small cupboard for library books that the kids can borrow. It’s a very straightforward, local school where the focus is just on getting through the daily lessons without much fuss or any fancy gadgets.
