Thamarai Nursery & Primary School

Our school is at 51B on Kumar Street in Kanchipuram. Because the street is narrow, it gets quite lively when parents are dropping off or picking up their children in the morning. The building itself is a standard structure that we’ve used for many years now. We have several small classrooms for the nursery and primary sections. In some corners where the rain hits, the paint on the walls is peeling a little, but it doesn't bother the kids. We use basic wooden furniture and the students have their own spots for bags and books. During recess, you’ll often hear the sounds of games and shouting coming from the small play area. Instead of expensive equipment, we just have essentials like blackboards, chalk, and charts for teaching. The teachers are local women who know the neighborhood families very well. It’s the kind of place where people just walk in to talk to us without an appointment or any formality. We spend our days teaching the basics and making sure everyone stays on track. When the electricity goes out, we just open the windows wider to keep the air moving through the rooms. Since we have a few trees in the yard that drop leaves, we spend time sweeping those up every morning. It’s a very honest, hardworking atmosphere for the local kids. We just keep it simple and focus on the lessons.
