Sri Chelliamman Brick Industries

Sri Chelliamman Brick Industries is located at 3/1, Vm Nagar in Vidayur. It is a quiet enough spot out here in the Tiruvallur area, though the work itself is never really quiet. We have the sound of the tractors and the clinking of bricks being stacked almost every hour of the daylight. The yard is quite big, and we use every bit of it to dry out the bricks before they go into the kiln. We named the place after the goddess, hoping for some good luck with the weather. In this part of the country, the heat is actually our friend because it helps the drying process go faster. However, it makes the physical work very tiring for the men. We don't have a lot of fancy machinery here; it is mostly manual labor and traditional methods that have been used for years. You can find us easily if you follow the road into Vm Nagar. There is usually a pile of firewood near the entrance for the firing process. We don't spend much time in the office, as there is always something to check on outside. Sometimes the clay isn't exactly the right consistency, so we have to spend the whole day mixing and testing. It’s a simple life, but it keeps us busy from sunrise to sunset. We just try to get the work done and get the trucks loaded for the local builders.
