Shree Mehoji School

Shree Mehoji School is over in Osian, which is part of the Jodhpur district. It’s a rugged kind of place, fitting for the landscape around here. The school building is simple, made of stone and concrete that stays relatively cool when the sun is beating down on Jodhpur. There aren’t any high-tech labs or fancy carpets here. It’s just rows of benches and teachers who know every student by their first name. Most of the families in Osian are working hard, and the school is a place where their kids can spend the day safely. We have a small staff room where teachers drink tea and talk about the day's lessons. The windows look out onto the dry ground, and you might see a stray goat or two wandering past the fence now and then. It’s a slow-paced life, but the school day is always full. We follow the usual routine—prayer, lessons, a break for tiffin, and then more lessons until it’s time to go home. The kids bring their lunch in steel boxes, and you can smell the pickles and rotis during the break. It’s a very honest kind of place. We don’t make big promises; we just provide a space for the children in this part of Jodhpur to get their schooling done without any fuss. The bell rings at the same time every day, and we all just keep to the schedule.
