N. V. Kalia Steel Industries

We operate out of Uttam Singh Nagar in the Basti Sheikh area. If you know Jalandhar, you know it’s a place where a lot of metalwork and industry happens. Our family or some of us at least have been working with steel for a long time now. The workshop at N. V. Kalia Steel Industries is usually full of the sound of cutting and grinding. It’s loud, and there’s always a bit of iron smell in the air, which is just how it is in this line of work. We make different steel products, mostly things people need for building or for other workshops. We don't have a big fancy office with air conditioning everywhere; most of the space is taken up by the raw steel and the heavy machinery. It gets pretty hot in the summer, but the guys are used to it. We aren't trying to be the biggest company out there, just trying to do a decent job on the orders we get. Sometimes we're running behind when a machine breaks down, but we usually get it fixed and back on track pretty quick. It’s a practical business. We talk to our customers directly, often just over a cup of tea in the back. There’s no corporate ladder here, just a group of people who know how to handle steel. We’ve stayed in Basti Sheikh because it’s where our roots are and where we know the neighbors. It’s simple, tough work, and we like it that way.
