Upper India Steel Mfg. & Engg. Co. Ltd. is based out in a village called Dharampur, which is near Mukerian in the Hoshiarpur district of Punjab. Being out in the countryside means the surroundings are a bit different from your usual industrial area. We have the factory and the office right there, and it’s a place where you can hear the machines running all day long. The work we do with steel is heavy and it can get quite dirty, but that is just the nature of manufacturing. Most of the staff comes from the nearby villages, so it feels more like a community than a big company. We have our routines, starting early in the morning before it gets too hot. The office part is just a few rooms where we keep the records and talk to the transporters. Mukerian isn't a huge place, so everyone knows where the steel plant is located. We don't bother with fancy brochures or polished sales pitches. We just focus on the engineering and the production side of things. It is loud, it is dusty, and it is a lot of manual labor, but we have been doing it this way for years. Sometimes the roads getting out here can be a bit rough after the rain, but the trucks still manage to get through. We just keep our heads down and do the work.
