Khalsa Building Material

Our yard is over at Chowk Gujja Peer in New Gobind Nagar. Being near the bye pass makes it easier for the big trucks to get in and out without getting stuck in the narrow city streets. Khalsa Building Material has been a part of this landscape for a good bit of time. We deal with heavy stuff like sand, bricks, and cement. It gets messy, especially when the wind picks up and blows the dust everywhere. My clothes usually have a layer of white powder on them by noon. We don’t spend much time in the office; we’re mostly outside checking the loads or talking to the drivers. The phone rings a lot with people asking about prices or when their delivery is arriving. We try to be straight with people. If the truck broke down, we tell them it broke down. There is no point in making up stories. This part of Jalandhar is always under some kind of construction, so there is always someone needing something. The tea here is strong and we drink a lot of it while waiting for the next load to come in. It’s hard work, lifting and moving things all day, but it’s what we know how to do. We don't have a logo or a slogan. We just have a pile of materials and a gate that stays open most of the day. It’s a loud place but it’s ours.
