Tilak Raj Murti Wala

The shop here at 3618 Kilan Ji Ka Rasta is usually covered in a thin layer of white dust. That is just how it is when you work with stone all day long. My hands are always rough from holding the chisels and the small hammers we use. It is not a clean job but we have been in this spot for a long time now. You can hear the tapping sound from the street before you even see the door. Sometimes the tea stall guy brings over a few cups and we sit on the wooden stools to take a break. The space is a bit cramped because we have blocks of marble waiting in the corners and finished pieces wrapped up near the front. It gets really hot in the afternoons during the summer months but the stone stays cool to the touch. We do not have a big fancy showroom with bright lights or anything like that. People just walk in off the street because they know we are here. Most of the time I am hunched over a piece of stone trying to get the eyes or the hair just right. It takes a lot of patience and my neck usually aches by the evening. The neighbors are used to the noise and the dust by now. We just keep our heads down and do the work that needs doing every single day. That is how life goes here on this road.
