Being at Ajmeri Gate means there is never any peace and quiet. Indra Bazar is one of those places where you can hear horns honking from morning until the shutters go down at night. Sai Telecom has been in this spot for several years now. It is a small shop tucked between a garment store and a place that sells old watches. I spend most of my day sitting on a wooden stool, looking out at the crowds. Sometimes a tourist gets lost and comes in asking for directions to the main market, and I try to help them out as best as I can. Most of the work involves fixing mobile phones that people dropped or selling screen protectors that they keep scratching. The walls are a bit faded now and the ceiling fan makes a clicking noise that I’ve grown used to over time. We keep a stock of basic phones and lots of different cables because someone is always losing theirs. Lunch is usually a tiffin brought from home, eaten quickly between customers. My nephew comes by after school to help organize the drawers because they get messy so fast. It isn’t a glamorous job, but it keeps me busy and I like talking to the regulars who stop by just to say hello or check their balance. The street lights outside flicker a bit in the evening when the market gets really crowded.
