Our place is over in Surajpole, specifically in Laxmi Narainpuri near the old gate. It’s an area with narrow streets and lots of activity. Most of our day is spent in the middle of cardboard boxes and rolls of packing tape. There is always a lot of noise from the tape dispensers being pulled fast. We are constantly checking lists to make sure the right items are going into the right crates. The floor is usually covered in packing peanuts or bits of paper. We work out of an old building, so the rooms are a bit small and the stairs are steep. We have to be careful moving things so nothing gets broken before it leaves. Outside, the street is usually crowded with rickshaws and delivery bikes, which makes loading a bit of a challenge sometimes. We have to time our pickups just right. It’s a lot of repetitive work, but we have a system that works for us. Everyone knows their job, whether it’s wrapping things up or writing the addresses on the outside of the boxes. We usually have the radio playing in the background to keep things moving. By the time evening comes, we’re usually tired but the pile of boxes is ready for the truck. It’s just how we get things done here near the gate.
