Nirmal Stone Trading Company

Operating out of Church Road near the Jaipur G P O is where you’ll find Nirmal Stone Trading Company. It’s a crowded area and parking is always a nightmare, but we’ve managed here for years. The building is old and the walls could probably use a fresh coat of paint, but they hold up fine. We spend our mornings looking at slabs of stone and talking to the drivers who bring them in from the quarries. There is a lot of grit and sand under our fingernails by the end of the day. The noise from the main road never really stops, so we have to speak a bit louder to hear each other. We don't have any big signs or flashy lights, just a simple board that’s a bit faded from the sun. Usually, there are a few pieces of marble or granite leaning against the wall outside. We use a lot of water to keep the dust down when we’re moving things around. The post office is right nearby, so people are always walking past our door. Lunch is usually brought from home in steel tiffins and we eat together in the back room. It’s a simple life of trading stone, dealing with the weather, and making sure the accounts are mostly right at the end of every week. We know the neighbors well and often share a newspaper in the morning while the first tea of the day is brewing on the stove.
