Gulafshan Machine Repairing Works

Our workshop is located in Chandpole Bazar, specifically in Mominan Gali Number 1 along Tophane Ka Rasta. We’re quite close to Darbar School, so we hear the kids during their breaks. It’s an old part of the city and the lanes are narrow. We spend our time surrounded by broken machines and oily rags. People bring in all sorts of mechanical stuff that has stopped working. Most of the time, it’s just a matter of taking it apart, cleaning the pieces, and putting it back together again. The floor is usually covered in metal shavings and we have tools hanging from every available hook on the walls. It’s not the cleanest place, but that’s the nature of repair work. We’ve been fixing things here for a long time. Some of the machines people bring us are really old and take a lot of patience to figure out. We sit on small stools for hours sometimes just looking at a motor or a gear. There’s always a smell of grease and burnt oil in the air. We don't have a receptionist; if you want us, you just walk in and wait until we look up from what we're doing. It’s a lot of hard work, but we like the challenge of making something run again. We stay busy because there’s always something breaking down in the market. It’s a humble setup, but it’s ours and it works for us and the locals.
