If you know where Jagatpura Mode is in Malviya Nagar, then you’ve probably passed by Bhatia Battery Service. We are right at number 25. It’s a busy corner and there is always someone honking or trying to squeeze a truck through. The shop is filled with batteries of all sizes, mostly sitting on the floor or on the heavy wooden shelves we built. It smells a bit like metal and old casing in here. My clothes usually have a few spots on them from the work. We spend a lot of time just checking levels and making sure things are charging right. There isn't much space to sit down, just a couple of plastic chairs that have seen better days. Customers come in when their cars won't start or when their home backup goes out. We don’t do much talking besides what’s needed for the job. It gets dark pretty early in the winter months, so we have the big lights on inside. The floor is concrete and stays cool even when the sun is beating down on the street outside. Being near the Mode means we see everyone passing through toward the airport side. It’s a loud place to work, but you get used to the noise after a few weeks. We just handle the batteries and try to keep the shop from getting too cluttered, though that’s hard with all the old units coming back for scrap.
