I work out of a small space in Adarsh Nagar, near Ashok Chowk at J-10/926. It is more of a studio than a proper shop. The walls are covered in marks and there are jars of brushes everywhere you look. I spend my hours painting and drawing, sometimes lost in what I am doing for half the day without realizing it. The neighborhood is fairly quiet, though you can hear the sounds of the chowk nearby. People sometimes stop by to see what I am working on, which is fine, though I usually have paint on my hands and can’t really shake hands. It is not a clean or organized place. There are canvases leaned against the walls and sketches scattered on the floor. I like it that way; it feels like things are actually happening. Being an artist in a place like this means you have to be practical too. I spend time thinking about materials and where to get the right kind of frames. It is a slow process, creating something from nothing. Some days the ideas come easily, and other days I just stare at a blank surface. I’ve been in Adarsh Nagar for a while now, and the light in this room is quite good in the mornings. That is when I do my best work before the heat of the day sets in and everything slows down. It’s just me and my colors, trying to finish whatever is on the easel.
