It is loud, crowded, and always full of energy. Our shop is just one of many in this area. We focus on sarees because that is what we know best. Every morning is a rush to get the shop ready before the crowds arrive. The streets of Begum Bazar are so narrow that sometimes it feels like the whole city is trying to fit into one lane. We don't have a lot of space, so our sarees are stacked high on the shelves. It takes some practice to pull one out without making a mess of the whole pile. We spend our days showing different fabrics to customers and talking about the colors. It is hard work being on your feet all day, especially when it’s hot. We don't use any air conditioning, just a couple of ceiling fans that work as hard as they can. Dealing with the crowd can be tiring, but we are used to it by now. We’ve been here for a long time, and we know how the market works. It isn't a fancy boutique. It is a real shop in a real market, doing things the old-fashioned way. We just keep our heads down and serve the people who come to the bazaar.
