Our place is over in Swetha Complex, right on the Mallapur Main Road. If you know where Shiva Hotel is, we are basically right there in Narsimha Nagar. It’s a busy street, especially in the mornings and evenings when everyone is commuting to work or heading home. Inside the shop, there are three chairs and some big mirrors that we have to wipe down constantly because of the hairspray and dust. We’ve been cutting hair here for quite some time now. It’s mostly guys from the neighborhood coming in for a quick trim or a shave before their shift starts. The radio is usually playing some local hits in the background to keep things lively while we work. Sometimes it gets loud when the traffic outside picks up, and the horns start blaring. We have those old-style revolving chairs that still work fine even if they squeak a little bit when you turn them. On Sundays, there is usually a line out the door, so people just sit on the wooden bench and talk about cricket or the weather while they wait their turn. We keep a stack of newspapers on the side table, though they usually end up all crumpled and messy by noon. It’s a straightforward shop. We don’t do anything too fancy, just the basic stuff people need to look decent. The floor gets covered in hair pretty fast, so we are always sweeping with the old broom. It’s a good routine we have going here in Mallapur.
