We operate out of Flat 101 in the Sri Srinivasa Apartments. It’s right across from the Ramakrishna Vidyaniketan in Deendayal Nagar. It feels a bit strange running an export business from an apartment building, but it works for us. We turned the main living area into a space for checking the silk fabrics. There are rolls of silk sitting where a sofa might usually be. It’s a quiet residential neighborhood, so we try not to make too much noise when we are packing the crates. The silk is beautiful, but it's a lot of work to make sure it doesn't get snagged or dusty. We spend a lot of time with lint rollers and soft brushes. The balcony is where we take our tea breaks and look at the school across the road. It’s a small operation, mostly just family and a couple of helpers who know how to handle the delicate threads. Sometimes the elevator in the building is out of order, which makes moving the heavier boxes a real challenge down the stairs. We don't have a fancy office with glass partitions. It’s just rooms filled with fabric and desks with stacks of export papers. We manage everything from here, from the first inspection of the cloth to the final labeling for shipping. It’s a steady rhythm that keeps us busy from morning until late evening. The doorbell rings a lot with couriers dropping off envelopes and checking the flat number.
