If you drive out past the city center to the 7th K.M. Stone on Meerut Road, you’ll find our gates. Rana Heavy Engineering Ltd. is a big name on a big sign, but inside it’s just a bunch of us wearing grease-stained shirts and heavy boots. The machines we have are loud and heavy, which I suppose is why we are out here where there’s more space to breathe. Every morning, the sound of the shutters going up marks the start of another long day. We handle big projects that take a lot of patience and heavy lifting. Sometimes the crane gets stuck and we have to spend half the morning fixing it before we can even start the real work. It gets dusty out here on Meerut Road, especially with the heavy trucks passing by constantly. We don’t have any air conditioning in the main shed, so the summers are pretty brutal. We drink a lot of water and keep the big floor fans going. It’s a lot of technical stuff, but we explain it in plain words to anyone who asks. Most of the workers have been here since they were young men, and we’ve seen the road change a lot over the years. More buildings and more traffic appear every year, but our shop stays pretty much the same. We just focus on the heavy steel and making sure the welds are solid and the measurements are right.
