Sun Rice Industry

Our place is situated out in Periya Illiyam, right near the Pothiyapalayam Post. The Kangayam area is well known for this kind of rice work, so we just fit in with the rest of the landscape here. It is a bit of a drive from the main town, but we actually like it being a little quiet. We mostly handle the milling and the sorting of the grains. There is a lot of constant noise from the sifters and the vibrators. We have a few guys who have been working with us for many years now. They know the quirks of the machines better than I ever will. We don’t have a marketing team or anything polished like that. We just answer the landline and see who needs a load of rice that day. The building at 2/42 is where we spend almost all of our daylight hours. It has high ceilings to try and keep it cool, but it still gets very stuffy when the machines are running. We keep a close eye on the quality, mostly making sure all the little stones are out of the mix. It is basic work, but it takes up the whole day. Sometimes the power goes out without warning, and everything just stops. We just go sit outside under the tree and wait for it to come back on. We grew up around here, so we know most of the farmers and the local traders. We don't use any fancy software to track things, just an old ledger and some grit.
