Kathirvel Rice Mill

Kathirvel Rice Mill is located at No:485 on Tirupur Road in Kangayam. You can usually tell you're close because of the smell of the grain and the sound of the machines. The mill has been at this spot for quite a while and the building shows its age. Everything is covered in a fine layer of dust no matter how much we sweep. We have big trucks coming in from the farms all day long to drop off the rice. The noise of the engines and the machinery is something you just get used to after a week of working here. Inside, it's a lot of manual labor, moving heavy bags and making sure the machines are running right. Sometimes they break down and we have to spend the whole afternoon getting them back up and running. It’s hard work and your back definitely feels it by the end of the day. We have a small office area where we keep the records but most of the action happens on the floor. The sun beats down on the tin roof and it gets really hot in the middle of the day. We drink a lot of water and take breaks in the shade when we can. We are just a local mill doing what we’ve always done. There’s no fancy talk here, just the sound of grain moving through the machines and the work that needs to be finished before we can lock up and head home.
