Sri Murugan Modern Rice Mill

Out here at 8, Ayyampalayam Nall Road, the sound of the machinery is something you just get used to after a while. Sri Murugan Modern Rice Mill is where we spend most of our daylight hours, and usually some of the night too when the season is peak. Mettupalayam Po in Vellakoil is a place where people really understand the value of good grain. We take the raw paddy from the local farmers and run it through the mill to get the rice ready for the market. It’s dusty work, and you definitely need a good wash at the end of the shift. The machines are old but they still do the job well if you oil them right and listen to the sounds they make. My father started this and now we just keep it going as best as we can. Ayyampalayam Nall Road stays pretty dusty because of the trucks coming in and out, but that’s part of the trade. We don't have a fancy office or anything like that. Just a small desk with a lot of ledger books and a phone that rings more than it should. People come from all over Vellakoil because they know we don't cut corners with the milling process. It’s a loud, hot place to work, but there is something satisfying about seeing the clean rice come out the other side.
