Om Sakthi Rice & Oil Mill

Our mill is right on the Kochi Highway at number 63 in Kakapalayam. When all the machines are running together, the noise is enough to make your ears ring. We handle both rice and oil processing here throughout the week. Moving heavy sacks of paddy or checking the oil press takes up most of our daylight hours. Because of the dust and the heat from the motors, it gets quite uncomfortable inside during the summer months. Local farmers often stop in with their harvests, and highway travelers sometimes pull over if they need fresh oil. My father was the one who started this place years ago, and honestly, not much has changed since those early days. There isn't a fancy office or any computer systems to be found here. Everything gets written down in a big ledger book with a pen. If the power goes out, which happens sometimes, we just sit in the quiet and wait for it to return. While the floor is usually a bit slick from the oil, we try to keep it as tidy as possible. Making a living this way is simple but physically demanding. We know the regulars well and usually have their order ready before they even say a word. By the end of the day, our hands are usually stained and our backs are tired. Marketing isn't something we bother with. People find us because of the smell of fresh rice. We just lock up at sunset.
