Velavan Oil Mills

We are right here on Kodumudi Road, just a short walk from the higher secondary school in Mettukadai. If you have been around Kangayam for a while, you probably know where we are because of the machines running all day. The mill has been part of my life for a long time now. Most mornings start early, usually before the sun gets too hot, to get everything ready for the day's work. The sound of the oil being pressed is something you just get used to after a few years. Our place at D. No 86 isn't fancy or anything like that. It is just a workspace where we get things done. Sometimes the trucks blocking the road can be a bit of a headache for the neighbors, but we try to keep things moving as fast as we can. It’s a lot of manual work, lifting heavy bags and making sure the equipment is behaving itself. My clothes usually end up smelling like the seeds we use by lunchtime. We see the kids from the school walking past every afternoon when their classes finish. It’s a simple life here in this corner of Kangayam. We aren't doing anything groundbreaking, just running Velavan Oil Mills and keeping the doors open. Some days are slow and we just sit and talk, but other days we don't even have time to eat properly. It is just the way the business goes.
