Our mill is situated at number 156 on Kovai Main Road, right in the Kadaiyur Post area of Kangayam. It’s a busy stretch of road, so there is always noise from the buses and lorries going past. Maharaja Rice Mills Pvt. Ltd. has been operating here for a good while, and we’ve seen the area change a lot over the years. We mostly deal with the rice coming in from local farmers. The work is repetitive, but there is a certain rhythm to it that you get used to after the first few months. We start early in the morning before the sun gets too high because the heat in Kangayam can be really tough once it hits midday. The machinery is heavy and needs a lot of looking after to make sure nothing breaks down in the middle of a big batch. We aren't big on fancy titles or corporate meetings; we mostly just talk over tea in the shade when we get a break. The office is small and usually covered in a thin layer of grain dust, no matter how much we sweep it out. We just try to keep things moving so the rice gets out to the shops on time. Sometimes the rain slows us down, or a delivery is late, but that is just part of running a mill. It is honest work and it keeps us busy from Monday to Saturday. Most people around here know us by name, which makes the long days feel a bit shorter.
