We set up Santhalpargana Deepjyoti Vikash Farmer Producer Company Limited here in Shikaripara. It’s based at Nithur Mandal’s place, he's the son of Mansaram Mandalghamra. We started this because things are tough for farmers around here and we wanted to work together. We work out of this small office which is really just a part of the house. It's not fancy or anything like that. Most of us are just neighbors from the village. We try to figure out how to get slightly better prices for what we grow in the fields. It's mostly rice and some vegetables depending on the season. Sometimes the rain doesn't come on time and that makes it real hard for everyone. We talk a lot about seeds and fertilizer when we meet up. We aren't big business people with suits. We just live here. Nithur keeps the papers in order in a few folders. People come by to ask questions about the crops or the company rules. We sit on the porch and talk it out. It's a lot of work to keep a company like this going when you also have to be out in the fields every day. We don't have a big website or a marketing team. Just this name and this address in Shikaripara. We've been doing this for a bit now. Everyone knows everyone else around here. If you come looking for us, just ask for Nithur Mandal. We are usually busy with the harvest or planning.
