Being over here at Shangri-La New Delhi in Sec-2, Gole Ket, means there is always something going on. It’s a big building and keeping everything running takes a lot of walking around. Most days, you’ll find us checking on rooms or making sure the lobby looks decent. We’ve got a lot of staff who have been here for a long time, so we kind of know how each other works. It’s not always perfect, sometimes a lightbulb goes out or a guest has a weird request, but we just deal with it as it comes. Gole Ket is a busy area in New Delhi, so there is constant noise from the street outside. We try to keep the inside feeling a bit more quiet. I usually spend my time talking to the kitchen crew or seeing if the laundry is moving along. We don't really do big speeches or have fancy goals, we just want the people who stay here to have a bed that’s made and a bathroom that’s clean. It’s a lot of practical work, like fixing leaky taps or moving furniture around for events. We are just a group of people trying to keep this place going day after day. It gets tiring, especially in the heat, but we just grab a tea and get back to it. There is always a floor to mop or a guest to help, so the days go by pretty fast for us.
