Routes Cabs

I run Routes Cabs out of a small space where I work with Ved Ram here in New Delhi. It is not a huge office with a receptionist and a lobby. It’s more like a room with a couple of phones and a lot of maps. We spend most of our time talking to drivers and trying to figure out where the traffic is worst today. Managing cabs in a city like Delhi is a headache. There is always a road closed or a car that won't start in the morning. We just try to keep the wheels turning, literally. Ved Ram has been doing this for a long time, so he knows all the shortcuts. I handle the bookings and the phone calls. Sometimes customers are angry because the driver is late, and I have to explain about the chaos on the roads. It is a very honest kind of work. We aren't trying to be the biggest company in India. We just want to make sure the people who call us get where they need to go. We drink a lot of chai during the day to stay awake. The office is usually a mess of keys and clipboards. It’s just us doing our best to make a living in the city. There isn't much more to it than that. We take it one ride at a time and hope the cars don't break down or get stuck in some protest downtown.
